Kukkiwon Taekwondo Headquarters...home Of WTF taekwondo
Kukkiwon taekwondo headquarters is the home of WTF taekwondo.
It's just outside Seoul in South Korea.
The day we visited Kukkiwon the Korean spring let us down.
It was windy, grey, wet and cold.
The Main Dojang at Kukkiwon
We took grateful shelter in the main building.
Which is basically a huge taekwondo Dojang surrounded on all sides by rows and rows of tiered seating.
The ceiling is great!
It's covered in the brightly coloured flags of taekwondo nations.
We enjoyed watching a training session for official poomse referees.
Because there were only a few of us there the building had the atmosphere of an empty church.
But no doubt it comes alive when the seats are full.
And a taekwondo competition is in full flow.
Kukkiwon Demonstration Team
Because the weather was so awful.
We expected the Kukkiwon demonstration to be cancelled.
But we clearly hadn't counted on the Korean spirit.
The demo team pulled out an unbelievable display.
And this was despite performing in bare feet.
On rough, freezing cold concrete.
In the pouring rain!
The timing was impeccable.
The taekwondo techniques clean and sharp.
And the jump breaks breathtaking.
We hugged our hot coffees tightly.
And savoured every moment.
Kukkiwon Taekwondo Headquarters Experience for Foreigners
This was a great and unexpected surprise.
Still feeling inspired by the demo team.
We got the chance to train in a beautiful ancient Korean setting.
We quickly put on the supplied dobson
And lined up in a wonderfully ornate, open building.
Looking out onto a fabulous courtyard.
Our teacher was Master Chul Wung Park.
Master Park spoke excellent English. And made the class fun and educational for all ages and abilities.
One student have never trained before. She had a great time.
We couldn't help but be inspired by the fabulous setting as we worked through basic kicks and punches.
And at the end we enjoyed the chance to do some breaking.
Which is always very satisfying.
Although we're not sure we were quite as good as the Kukkiwon Demonstration Team! ;-)
