Journey to Black Belt

Well, checking in again...thought I'd post an update on my journey as I am continually amazed at my tae kwon do experience!

On August 6th, 2011, I earned my Candidate belt at our school's annual outdoor test/potluck bbq! That was a special test for me because I had a lot of family there and when our instructor has us face our families and bow to thank them for their continued support..well, that was the first test they were able to be at...but it meant a lot and I thought the test went really well!

Our grandmaster flew up from Ft. Worth, TX for the test and I gave it everything I had...I did a sliding hook kick and a self-hold break for my breaks and did every tae geuk form and one-step for every colored belt form - needless to say, I went through a lot of Gatorade!!

I am officially testing for my Black Belt in April!!! I am so excited because throughout my training, I have continued to set goals for myself and seeing those goals become a reality is - in my opinion - one of the most gratifying benefits of this journey...and most importantly, I have learned that my black belt isn't the goal - rather, the bi-product of the work I've done and will continue to do.

My goal is to be at least 1% better at every class than I was at the class before. To be able to pass that spark on to other people is a privilege. I am beginning to understand why the black belt is called the "beginning"...not only is it the start of serious study in tkd, but I think it's kind of like that saying, "you have to crawl before you can walk"...during color belt training, you're learning the basic movements and forms..you're learning to walk. When I earn my black belt, then...I'll learn to "fly"...:)
