Martial Arts - the base of our Family Fitness Lifestyle
Getting your family into fitness can be difficult!
We think the key is finding something everyone wants to do together.
And something that everyone can do together.
In this section of our site we describe how taekwondo gives us the perfect family fitness lifestyle.
We tell you more about marital arts fitness.
And we talk about respect and deepening family bonds.
Martial arts brings fantastic fitness
Martial arts is a family fitness program like no other!
- Aerobic exercise which is great for all round fitness and keeps your heart healthy.
- Anaerobic exercise which helps strengthen your body.
- Stretching to keep your body supple and help prevent injury.
- Learning sequences of moves to sharpen your mind and improve you co-ordination.
- Learning to defend yourself against attack.
- Breaking boards which tests your technique and empowers you.
- And sparring to teach you to deal with confrontation.
The all round physical and mental fitness we enjoy from our taekwondo training is like nothing we have experienced before. It brings us a sense of enormous wellbeing.
And although we train and get fit side by side. Our fitness is an individual thing. And we can build it slowly at a pace that is right for each us.
If we were playing soccer or tennis together the differences in our size, speed, ability and strength would be a big problem. But in taekwondo and other martial arts people of all shapes, sizes and ages can train together in the same lesson. If you need to work with a partner your instructor will pair you up with the right person.
Our family fitness lifestyle story
Finding martial arts and training together was the beginning of us finding our family fitness lifestyle. It's now just part of our routine to put on our white suits and go training as a family at least 3 times a week.
Leah can't remember life any other way.
In fact Leah asked us the other day what it feels like to be unfit. She has no idea! We told her we hope she never finds out.
For us as we became fit and strong through taekwondo our bodies and minds transformed and good things started to happen in our lives.
Good things that spilled out into our everyday routines. And gave us new balance and purpose. And our lives changed radically!
Develop a healthy respect for each other and strengthen family bonds
There's no getting away from it...
...any martial art is tough. It's physically and mentally a big challenge.
But the good news is that if you take on this challenge as a family you will develop a huge respect for each other.
Parents respect their children for having the courage to try sparring and picking themselves up when they take a knock.
And children respect their parents for attempting something so difficult as an adult.
This mutual respect deepens family bonds...
There's nothing like going though something tough together to strengthen relationships!
Healthy social relationships
And talking of relationships...
Training with other martial arts families opens the door to great new friendships.
We've met some wonderful taekwondo families over the years. We've become great friends with the adults as Leah has with the children. And of course some of the older kids have proved to be great role models for Leah.
The whole environment is nurturing, caring and healthy. And that family atmosphere makes us want to keep going to training each week. Especially when our real families are overseas.
We see a lifetime family fitness lifestyle
And as we enjoy year after year of training we can see this thing becoming a habit for life.
Training is just part of our week. Something we do just like getting dressed in the morning.
And in martial arts there is never an end. There is always a new challenge. Always something to learn. Always another way to grow.
And what about you? Are you a martial arts family?
Have you found a great family fitness lifestyle through martial arts?
Could you inspire and motivate other families?
We'd love to hear your story!
